Attendance and Deadlines

Attendance Policies and Deadlines

No matter what type of learning environment (face-to-face, online, or hybrid), all courses will abide by NCSU’s First-Year Writing Program Attendance Policy.

Attendance and Deadline Policies
  1. Attendance policies for online/hybrid sections of ENG 101 and all sections of ENG 105 must be set at the beginning of the semester and all students must be notified.
  2. For hybrid classes, instructors may choose alternative face-to-face or online meetings during the reserved class time. Make sure students have the time blocked out throughout the semester since it’s their required seat time. If instructors change face-to-face for online time or online for face-to-face time, students must be notified in a timely manner. It is recommended that all alternative meeting days be noted on the course syllabus at the start of the semester.
  3. In online classes, face-to-face conferences or other in-person meetings cannot be required for students. Instructors may ask for in-person attendance, but it cannot be required or penalized. Use Google Hangouts or Skype as an alternative when conferencing with online/hybrid students.

Due Date Management

NC State installed a new Date Report last semester (Open University Date Report) that allows you to set all of the important due dates for your course from a single page. This is particularly helpful when rolling over your course from a previous semester.

You can access this functionality from the administration block of your course by going to “Reports” > “Dates.” Click on “Expand all” to display every activity in the course on a single page. If you are rolling your course over from a previous semester, please give it a try! It is a lot faster than clicking on each activity in your course and changing the dates one by one.
